Are you afraid to go to the dentist because of past experiences, uncertainty, inability to lose control, or fear of painful procedures? Do you ignore signs of dental issues and avoid the dentist at all costs? If so, we understand how debilitating dental anxiety can be, and we want to help you overcome your fears.

Please keep reading to learn more about how we use sedation dentistry at Edmond Dental Center.

What Is Dental Anxiety?

Avoiding the dentist can lead to tooth decay, periodontal disease, infections, weakened teeth and gums, and tooth loss. There are several symptoms indicating you suffer from dental anxiety. Some of these include the following:

  • Inability to sleep
  • Low blood pressure
  • Crying
  • Fainting
  • Sweating

Overcoming Dental Fears with Sedation Dentistry

At Edmond Dental Center, we encourage our patients to maintain regular dental appointments every six months. This way, we can perform a thorough examination, remove plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth, and assess any dental issues.

Being proactive about your dental care can help you avoid more complex dental treatments and minimize your anxiety. If you need help managing your dental fears, we offer the following sedation options:

  • Nitrous oxide — To keep you relaxed during your dental visit, we administer nitrous oxide through a mask. You will be awake and comfortable, and the effects wear off immediately.
  • Oral sedation — Another effective sedation option is oral sedation. We prescribe medication for you to take before your dental visit so you are calm when you arrive. You may be sleepy, so you’ll need to have someone drive you to and from your appointment.
  • IV sedation — For more severe dental anxiety, we can administer sedation intravenously through an IV. You will be conscious and able to answer questions, but you may not remember your appointment. You will need someone to drive you home after your dental procedure.
